Five Food Thrills in Philly

I was treated to some foodie brotherly love this past weekend in Philadelphia. I spent my short 24 hours running around seeing the sights and trying as many of the fun foods that Philadlphelphia is famous for as I could. If you’re headed there for a visit try some of these yummy Philly classics and hot spots.

Tony Luke's Philly Cheese SteakTony Luke’s
No wonder he beat Bobby Flay in the cheese steak throwdown. Mine was very delish with provolone (sorry wiz lovers), shrooms and onions. Everything melted together into the soft roll and tasted heavenly. I went to the original location on Oregon Avenue in South Philly and the place was hopping with happy cheese steak lovers since in addition to the great eats, the staff is extremely friendly and efficient at keeping things moving and the waits down. I loved it!

If you’re a foodie then a visit to the Reading Terminal market is a must. It’s almost sensory overload trying to take it all in and decide which delicacies to try. It’s been around since the late 1800’s and is bursting at the seams with over 80 vendors packed into the 1.7 acres offering fresh produce, fish, meat, poultry, wine, coffee, every imaginable sweet treat and also jewelry, housewares, books, crafts and a beer garden. We noshed on Amish hand rolled soft and buttery pretzels, creamy mac and cheese and of course sampled some lovely red wines.

Tria
Tria’s in Rittenhouse Square is a gold mine. They say they dig flavor and it really shows, from their selections of wine, cheese and beer to the tasty food combinations found on the menu. I enjoyed a really nice Bordeaux Blanc from France which is a mix of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc for $7.50. Most food items are priced below $10 and small plates range from $3 to $5. The space is large and great for dates or groups. The staff is very friendly and ready to help with recommendations.

I strolled through Ashburn Alley, the famous food court in the stadium, during the 7th inning stretch and couldn’t resist a a huge serving of Chickie’s & Pete’s crab fries generously seasoned with bay spice. The Alley also has other Philly classics including Tony Luke’s, Brewerytown, Bull’s BBQ, Campo’s Deli, Old City Creamery and many more. Food Network voted Citizens Bank Park the Best Ballpark Eats in ’07 and they received recognition from PETA for the last three years for having vegetarian options as well.

Sabrina’s Cafe
For brunch on Sunday we went to Sabrina’s Café, the one on Callowhill just north of the museum district. It’s a funky place with colorful walls and decorations and an extremely friendly wait staff. They dish up huge portions of creative twists on brunch classics like the pumpkin pancakes with white chocolate chips and strawberry mint butter and I’ve never seen such colossal French toast; they use thick pieces of Challah bread and stuff it with cream cheese and bananas then caramelize it in vanilla bean maple syrup. You know a place is good when it’s packed with happy people and based on this barometer Sabrina’s is off the charts—there was a huge line to get in!
