The Wave, Coyote Buttes, Arizona

The Wave is an amazing natural wonder — sandstone rock which has been formed by millions of years of erosion into a wave shape with stunning, multi-colored swirls of layered strata. It’s part of the Coyote Buttes, an area located in northern Arizona right on the Utah border and about 30 miles west of Page.

Although very popular today, this area was unknown as recently as 15 years ago when it showed up in 1995 in Germany in magazines and the “Faszination Natur” movie by Gogol Lobmayr.

Hikers and photographers are anxious to visit the Wave due to its shape and amazing vibrant color however, access is extremely hard to come by. To preserve the formation, only 20 visitors are allowed access each day and permits are required, which are not easy to obtain! 10 permits are vied for through an online lottery and the other 10 permits are handed out via on-site lottery, so you’re really taking your chances but what a pay-off if you’re one of the lucky 20!
